The term is used in tantra, in yoga and other spiritual teachings. They may have different characteristics, places of localization. In different systems, there are different numbers of chakras, they can be six, seven or nine.

The most frequently mentioned chakras are:

• Sahasrara
• Ajnya
• Vishuddha
• Anahata
• Manipura (nabhi-chakra)
• Svadhishthana
• Muladhara 

Natha tradition adds following chakras to given seven:

• Talu
• Bhrumadhya
• Nirvana
